3 Players to Look Out For This World Cup

The 2010 Fifa World Cup is just a few short days away and excitement is building day by day. We all know about exciting players such as Argentina's Lionel Messi, Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo and England's Wayne Rooney, but every World Cup, a new star or two are born. Someone hardly anybody has heard of will attain superstardom. Who will be the breakout star this World Cup? Here are 3 contenders:

1) Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez (Mexico)
Javier Hernandez was a relatively unknown forward for Guadalajara (also known as Chivas) in Mexico until Manchester United signed him in April 2010. The son of Javier Hernandez Gutierrez, who played in Mexico '86, Hernandez is more commonly known as Chicharito or "little pea" for his hazel eyes. His goal scoring form for his club led to a national call up where he scored an amazing 4 goals in 7 games. Already a big star on Youtube, Chicharito has a huge future ahead of him. Will he be able to fire Mexico to glory? With Mexico playing in the first match of the World Cup against hosts South Africa, we may not have to wait for too long to find out.

2) Adam Johnson (England)
Only recently, Adam Johnson was playing second fiddle to Stewart Downing in the Middleborough lineup. With Middlesborough's relegation from the Premier league, his chance for superstardom seemed to have been lost. However a shock transfer to Manchester City in February 2010 gave him a new lease of life. Johnson has been in excellent form and has settled quickly in a team of superstars such as Carlos Tevez and Emmanuel Adebayor. His excellent form has led to a surprise inclusion in Fabio Capello provisional team of 30. If he survives the cut, Johnson could very well be the solution to England's left midfield problem.

3) Gonzalo Higuain (Argentina)
Cristiano Ronaldo has been the superstar this season for Real Madrid, but striker Gonzalo Higuain isn't far behind. Often overshadowed by his more glamorous counterparts such as Raul and van Nistelrooy, Higuain has never disappointed after being called upon and has been one of the most outstanding strikers in Spain this season. It has been the same at international level where Higuain was only called up for the last 2 matches of Argentina's qualification campaign. Higuain had a amazing debut, scoring the crucial first goal against Peru and playing a big part in Argentina's eventual qualification.

Soroton Perlawanan Kelayakan Piala Dunia 2010

FIFA World Cup 2010 - Group-A Preview

Group A is the only one with 2 FIFA World Cup winners, in France and Uruguay. Uruguay who won in 1930 and 1938, and have never impressed, thereafter. Mexico, in fact, have been more dominant than Uruguay, on the world stage, with several FIFA WC appearances.

France, of course, were the winners in 2002, and are the best of the group, though their controversial qualification dominated the headlines, recently. Nothing much is expected of the fourth team, South Africa, whose best claim to fame is as hosts to the tournament.

France have an all-win record of three matches, against South Africa, in 2 friendlies in 1997 and 2000, and 2002 WC group match.

Mexico have a better record against the French, drawing one of three World Cup encounters, while losing the other two.

They last met in a WC, in England 1966. However, France have made a clean sweep of 3 other matches played since, including a 4-0 thrashing of the Mexicans at the 2001 Federation Cup.

France's showing against Uruguay in past tournaments is similar, with a win and a draw, in 1966 and 2002, respectively.

A solitary World Cup meeting between Uruguay and Mexico ended in a draw. The teams have since traded wins and draws, equally. The last match in 2005 went 3-1 in Mexico's favour.

South Africa have never played Mexico in any previous edition of the World Cup, though in 2 friendlies between the teams, Mexico have had the upper hand. Uruguay have a draw and win to show in matches against the hosts, neither in a World Cup.

Conventional wisdom says France and Mexico will go through, from this group.

A Brief History of World Cup Football 2010

The FIFA (Federation Internationale Football Association) World Cup Tournament takes place every four years, and pits the best football teams from participating nations against one another to determine the world champion team. FIFA qualifying rounds take place over the three years between matches, and competition is fierce for the 32 final positions. The tournament is the pinnacle of international football, and it brings together fans from all over the world in a different location every four years. With national pride at stake, the matches are generally very intense and fun to watch.

The Early Years

The first World Cup Tournament was held in Uruguay in 1930, with teams from South America, Europe, and North America competing. Before the second World War, the World Cup struggled to find enough teams who were willing and able to afford an international tournament every four years. Logistics made traveling with a team difficult, and the many wars and skirmishes throughout most of Europe and South America dampened the enthusiasm of fans to make the trip to watch their nation compete. The outbreak of World War II caused it to be canceled in 1942 and 1946.

How the Tournament Has Evolved

After World War II was over, football and the World Cup became more popular than ever. Europe and South America dominated the tournament, and usually had an easy time defeating the few teams who competed from North America and Africa. In 1982 FIFA expanded the tournament to include 32 teams, which allowed more teams from outside of Europe and South America to participate. Since the expansion, there have been more and more teams qualifying and competing well from every corner of the globe. As the event has gained more publicity, and smaller nations have experienced more success, the worldwide popularity has grown exponentially.

What Makes Brazil Special

Brazil is the only nation that has been involved in every single FIFA World Cup Tournament since 1930. The Brazilian team is often one of the best on the field, and they have taken part in some of the most famous matches ever played. In 1930, Brazil defeated the Uruguay team in a match that is still talked about today, known as the "Maracanazo" match. Brazil has won the tournament five times, which gives it a narrow lead over the Italian team, which has won four times.

World Cup 2010

This summer the FIFA World Cup Tournament will be hosted by Cape Town, South Africa. The build-up to this year's tournament has been tense, with accusations of poor officiating in several of the qualifying matches. This tension should lead to some intense games between rival nations during the tournament. Cape Town has built new roads and structures to accommodate the crowds that are expected to descend on the city in early summer. Tournament matches are televised and broadcasted over the radio to almost every country in the world, and football fans everywhere will be watching every match closely to see who is named the best in the world for the next four years.
